Class II, Type A2 Biological Safety Cabinet

    Lady Davis Institute
    Core facility
    Jewish General Hospital

A Class II, Type A2 Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC) is a primary containment device used to protect personnel, the environment, and the product from biohazards. These cabinets re-circulate 70% of the HEPA-filtered laminar air within the cabinet while 30% passes through a HEPA-filtered exhaust for discharge. They are suitable for work with Risk Group 1, 2, and 3 agents and are commonly used for microbiological studies, cell culture, and pharmaceutical procedures. This specific cabinet is reserved for processing high-risk Covid-19 samples, providing a safe workspace for handling potentially infectious materials while maintaining a sterile environment. While they offer personnel, product, and environmental protection, they are generally not recommended for work involving volatile toxic chemicals or radionuclides unless exhausted through a thimble connection.
