Speed-o-Cam United States Patent, No. US 6,382,0382

    Faculty of Engineering
    Mechanical Engineering
    McGill University

An innovative speed reducer intended to replace gears and harmonic drives.

    Advantages:

    • Low friction
    • Low backlash
    • High stiffness
    • Manufacturable with general-purpose CNC machine tools

    Three versions:

    • Planar, to couple parallel shafts
    • Spherical, to couple intersecting shafts
    • Convex planar, for higher machinability

To view the video of the spherical SoC testbed---download (12.9MB).

    Example of applications:

    1. Robotic actuators
    2. Mechatronic systems
