Our lab maintains a large collection of fresh frozen human spine specimens, including complete spines as well as individual lumbar, thoracic, and cervical segments. Many of these specimens include radiographs and DEXA scans for bone mineral density assessment, ensuring high-quality data for biomechanical and medical research applications. In addition to human spines, our collection includes human femurs as well as bovine and porcine spines and hips, which are commonly used for comparative anatomical and orthopedic studies.
All specimens are stored in a cold tissue bank within our specimen direction station, with a dedicated area for defrosting prior to soft tissue resection. A double sink and preparation station are available, equipped with the necessary tools for specimen handling. In some cases, specimens are partially potted in PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) to provide attachment points for mechanical testing fixtures. Specimens are retained for a minimal period post-study in a separate freezer, ensuring availability for further analysis or secondary testing.
These resources support medical research, surgical training, and biomechanical testing, providing valuable biological models for experimental studies.
