    Avanti J-26 XPI-1 Centrifuge

    Faculty of Arts and Science
    Biology
    Concordia University

Primary Function: A high-performance, refrigerated centrifuge, the Avanti J-26 XPI, designed for advanced separation techniques across a wide range of biological and chemical samples. It is capable of processing up to 6 liters and delivering subcellular fractions at high g-forces.

    Key Features & Capabilities:

    1. Microprocessor-controlled for interactive operation.
    2. Equipped with a brushless switched-reluctance (SR) drive motor for fast acceleration and deceleration.
    3. Features an automatic rotor identification system and Friction Reduction System (FRS) for enhanced efficiency and quieter operation.
    4. Integrated vacuum control circuitry and a precise temperature control system, maintaining temperatures from -10 to +40°C.
    5. Programmable acceleration and deceleration times, with the XPI model offering up to 12 rates.
    6. Compatible with SpinTrace II software for centrifuge control and data collection.
    7. Designed for biosafety with features like full containment barriers and compatibility with HarvestLine System Liners to reduce hands-on sample handling.

Applications: Suitable for applications requiring high g-forces, such as differential centrifugation, density gradient separations (e.g., Ficoll-Hypaque, Percoll, sucrose), and large-volume processing. It is widely used in proteomics, genomics, and cell biology for tasks including routine sample preparations, pelleting of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, extractions, purifications, concentrations, phase separations, and spin column/filter centrifugations. The system also facilitates rapid sedimentation of protein precipitates, large particles, cell debris, preparation of subcellular organelles (mitochondria, nuclei, chloroplasts, microsomes), separation of blood cells, nucleic acid precipitation, virus isolation, and bacteriophage isolation. It can run 24 microplates simultaneously and separate live cell populations with elutriation.

Availability Context: The Beckman Coulter Avanti J-26 XPI is commonly available on the secondary market as refurbished equipment, often including warranties and testing to factory specifications.
