    Biodex Balance System SD

    Concordia University

The Biodex Balance System SD is a highly versatile and comprehensive system designed for both static and dynamic balance testing and training. It serves as a critical tool for clinicians addressing a wide range of pathologies and patient needs, from improving balance and agility to developing muscle tone.

Featuring easy-to-follow, intuitive touchscreen operation, the Balance System SD guides users step-by-step through various testing protocols and training modes in both static and dynamic formats. The system is equipped with a 15.6-inch color touchscreen display for an improved user experience, and it runs on a Windows Operating System, accommodating external keyboard and mouse.

    Key Capabilities and Programs:

    1. Fall Risk Screening and Conditioning Program: Provides a fast and accurate program for older adults, comparing balance test results to age-dependent normative data to identify individuals at risk of falling.
    2. Closed-Chain, Weight-Bearing Assessment and Training: Facilitates assessment and rehabilitation for lower extremity patients.
    3. Concussion Management: Adds an objective balance assessment component to concussion management programs, allowing for pre-season baseline testing and post-injury return-to-play management.
    4. Vestibular Rehabilitation: An effective evaluation and rehabilitative device for patients experiencing vestibular issues, with exercises designed to improve coordination and sensory organization.
    5. Neurological Rehabilitation: Valuable for patients with conditions such as Stroke, Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, ALS, and Spinal Cord or Head Trauma, aiding in the restoration of motor skills and kinesthetic sense.
    6. Orthopedic and Sports Medicine: Used for assessing dynamic stability and balance for pre-season baseline, injury predisposition, or return to activity, and for training proprioception and stabilization.
    7. Interactive Training Modes: Includes proprioception, stabilization, range of motion, and weight shift exercises, with gaming options to stimulate and motivate postural improvements and enhance patient engagement.
    8. Objective Documentation: Utilizes a Microsoft SQL Database to store and retrieve patient data, generate printed color reports for tracking progress, documenting outcomes, and supporting insurance reimbursement.

The Balance System SD assesses neuromuscular control by quantifying the ability to maintain dynamic bilateral and unilateral postural stability on static or unstable surfaces. Optional accessories like FreeSway Handles provide security without impeding balance recovery, and the VibroTactile System offers enhanced biofeedback through vibrating sensations when patients sway outside target areas.
