    McGill University

D-PATH is a free, online tool designed to assist researchers and data custodians in navigating the complex landscape of legal and ethical requirements associated with the collection, storage, management, and sharing of health-related data. Developed as a proof-of-concept, D-PATH aims to promote responsible data sharing practices by providing tailored guidance on privacy obligations and best practices.

    Key Features:

    • Guided Assessment: Users are prompted with a series of straightforward questions addressing critical aspects of their data-sharing activities, such as legal jurisdiction and the nature of the entities involved.
    • Customized Guidance: Based on user responses, D-PATH generates a comprehensive list of applicable privacy obligations and security best practices, organized into themes including accountability, lawful storage and transfer, and necessary security safeguards.
    • Focus on Multiple Jurisdictions: While currently emphasizing Canadian and European privacy laws, D-PATH plans to expand its coverage to include additional legal frameworks in future iterations.

Availability: D-PATH is free to use and accessible online, serving as a valuable resource for the biomedical community to facilitate compliant and ethical data sharing.

Note: All resources and documentation are provided in English.

By simplifying complex legal and ethical concepts into an accessible format, D-PATH empowers researchers to navigate data privacy requirements effectively, thereby promoting responsible and compliant health data sharing practices.
