    Avanti J-30 I-2 Centrifuge

    Faculty of Arts and Science
    Biology
    Concordia University

Primary Function: This high-performance refrigerated floor model centrifuge, the Beckman Coulter Avanti J-30I, is engineered for rapid and efficient separation of biological samples and other mixtures based on density. It delivers near-ultracentrifuge capabilities, enabling the fastest separations possible in the shortest amount of time.

    Key Features & Benefits:

    1. Achieves maximum separation forces exceeding 100,000 x g, up to 110,500 x g (rotor dependent), at speeds up to 30,000 rpm, significantly accelerating discovery processes.
    2. Offers unmatched acceleration and deceleration rates, ensuring samples spend more time at full force and less time in the centrifuge, thereby maintaining sample integrity.
    3. Designed for high-throughput processing with a 4-liter maximum capacity, facilitating large-batch operations for applications like bacteria and cell membrane isolation.
    4. Features a user-friendly color touchscreen control system with program memory, automatic rotor detection, and customizable parameters for speed, temperature, and run time.
    5. Operates with low heat output and energy consumption, maintaining optimal laboratory conditions and quiet operation at less than 57 dBA.
    6. Equipped with a Friction Reduction System (FRS) and comprehensive safety features including imbalance control, rotor cover detection, and door locking.

Applications: Ideal for a wide range of demanding applications in molecular biology, biochemistry, and cell biology laboratories, including:

    1. Cell harvesting and protein purification.
    2. Nucleic acid isolation (DNA/RNA).
    3. General sample preparation.
    4. Bacteria and cell membrane isolation (e.g., using JLA-9.1000 rotor).
    5. DNA sample preparation in microplates (e.g., with JS-5.9 rotor).
    6. Protein separations using fixed-angle rotors.
    7. Separation of subcellular organelles via rate zonal centrifugation (e.g., with JS-24.38 rotor).
    8. Virus purification and density gradient centrifugation of cells.
    9. Sedimentation of nuclei and protein or nucleic acid precipitates.
    10. Clarification of tissue homogenates.

Current Availability Context: As of January 31, 2022, the Avanti J-30I high-speed centrifuge is obsolete and no longer available for purchase as a new unit from the manufacturer. However, ongoing service and support are provided by Beckman Coulter. Refurbished units are frequently available from specialized laboratory equipment resellers, with prices for used models typically ranging from approximately $9,500 to $16,500, often including a warranty.
