What researchers can do
A neutrophil marker of intestinal (fecal) or chronic systemic (plasma or serum) inflammation, by ELISA.
Calprotectin is a heterodimer of the calcium-binding proteins S100A8 and S100A9, expressed almost only in neutrophils and their precursors in the bone marrow, measured by ELISA.
- Fecal: reflects the recruitment and activation of neutrophils in the gut mucosa, and is used clinically to diagnose inflammatory bowel disease.
- Plasma or serum: tracks diseases with chronic inflammation, such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and systemic lupus erythematosus.
