Anxiety-related behavior is measured through the conflict between exploring and avoiding an exposed space: elevated plus maze, light/dark box and novelty-suppressed feeding. Depression-related behavior is measured with the forced swim and tail suspension tests, and with sucrose preference for anhedonia. For studies that need a stressor, the core runs restraint stress, chronic intermittent stress and social defeat stress paradigms before testing.
They run alongside the sensorimotor tests, so an anxiety or depression-related result can be read against locomotion in the same mice.
